Accreditation Information

The Virginia Law Enforcement Professional Standards Commission (VLEPSC), established in 1993, was tasked with creating an accreditation program for Virginia law enforcement. VLEPSC includes representatives from the Virginia Sheriff’s Association, Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police and the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services. The Commission developed a comprehensive, efficient and practical process that can assist Virginia’s law enforcement agencies in the creation and certification of policies and procedures. 

There are over 200 professional standards to be measured by. In developing these standards, the goals of the Commission are: 

• To increase the effectiveness and efficiency of services provided by law enforcement agencies
• To promote cooperation and coordination among agencies
• To ensure the appropriate level of training for personnel
• To promote public confidence in law enforcement
• To promote professionalism of law enforcement 

There are 105 accredited law enforcement agencies in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
