1. Electronic applications are available on the Virginia State Police website at www.vsp.state.va.us and at the bottom of this page along with these instructions. The Virginia State Police website also includes more detail on concealed carry laws.
2. Present completed application and copy of photo ID to Sheriff’s Office along with payment of $15. Make check/money order payable to “Brunswick Circuit Court Clerk.”
3. The applicant shall demonstrate evidence of competence with a handgun to the Sheriff’s Office by presenting documentation of one of the following:
- Completing any hunter education or hunter safety course approved by the Va. Dept. of Game & Inland Fisheries or a similar agency of another state;
- Completing any National Rifle Association Firearms safety or training course;
- Completing any firearms safety course or training course or class available to the general public offered by a law enforcement agency, institution of higher learning, or private or public instruction or organization or firearms training school utilizing instructors certified by the National Rifle Association or Dept. of Criminal Justice Services;
- Completing any law-enforcement firearms safety or training course or class offered for security guards, investigators, special deputies, or any division or subdivision of law enforcement or security enforcement;
- Evidence of equivalent experience with a firearm through participation in organized shooting competition or current military service or proof of an honorable discharge from any branch of the armed services;
- Completing any governmental police agency firearms training course and qualifying to carry a firearm in the course of normal police duties;
- A valid previous concealed handgun permit holder.
- Completing the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office Firearms Safety Training Course which is held monthly for free. (sign up at Sheriff’s Office)
All courses/training above shall be completed in-person.
4. The competence verification and background check will then be conducted by the Sheriff.
5. You will be notified in writing by the Clerk of Circuit Court as to the Court’s ruling on the application.
